The beginning of “The Baking Nurse”

I began baking at the age of 17 ( 11 years ago!) while I don’t claim to be an expert on the subject, I am highly knowledgeable when it comes to the subject. I received certification as a cake decorator in 2011 and decorated cakes in a local grocery store for a few months, while also working a home health aid. I forgot about baking and focused on my health care career, in 2015 I graduated Nursing School as an LPN. I had over six years in the health care field before I decided to start my own business. I enjoy being a nurse, but the enjoyment I get after creating something unique and edible is much greater.

I gave birth to my business in what I think of as one of the best cities for black entrepreneurs around, Greensboro NC. I made a cake for a co-worker, she came to work the next day and asked me why in the world I didn’t have business. “There is no way you should be giving your cakes away, that was delicious!” I obtained an LLC, sales tax license, the whole shebang! Business started off HOT! I was clocking out of work, taking a nap, waking up to bake and make deliveries, and rushing home to get ready to work a 12 hour shift. Cakes, cupcakes, cheesecakes, cookies, pies, you name it and more than likely I made it.

I’m two years into my business now, passing some goals and not quite reaching some. I can still proudly say that I have one of the few nurse owned and operated food businesses in my community. I still haven’t decided on which is harder, being a nurse or a business owner.
